BIOLOGICAL MODELS
Calculator logic is routed by biological model so canine, avian, reptile, fish, elasmobranch, invertebrate, coral and plant systems can remain scientifically distinct.

Canis lupus familiaris
The Golden Retriever pilot now follows the original Linear CMS map: Species Profile, Wild Nutrition, Captive Nutrition, Enrichment, Red Flags, Body Condition Score and Calculator.
SPECIES PROFILE
Developed in Scotland in the nineteenth century as a retrieving gundog, the Golden Retriever is now used across companion, assistance, therapy, detection, search-and-rescue and sporting settings. Nutritional management therefore has to respond to the individual dog's actual workload, body condition and life stage rather than a single breed-average ration.
| GROUP | RANGE | BODY WEIGHT | LIFESPAN | GROUP STRUCTURE | STATUS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic Dog · Gundog Group | Global, all climates | ♂ — kg · ♀ — kg | commonly around 10–12 years; individual longevity varies | Companion · working · assistance · sport | Domesticated |
Golden Retrievers are strongly food-motivated. Intake therefore needs active portion management and regular BCS review rather than relying on apparent appetite.

Hip and elbow disease are important breed concerns, making long-term body-condition control directly relevant to mobility and welfare.
Young, working and sporting Goldens can have very different expenditure from older companion animals. The calculator therefore uses the individual animal rather than a fixed breed ration.
The dense double coat makes fatty-acid provision and overall diet quality relevant to coat condition, while the coat itself can obscure visual BCS assessment.
Maximum daily energy currently stored in the production profile. Treats need to remain inside the total ration rather than being treated as nutritionally invisible.

WILD NUTRITION
Golden Retrievers have no wild feeding ecology of their own. This section therefore uses domestic-dog evolutionary biology as context: dogs descend from wolves but domestication altered feeding ecology, starch digestion and human-associated scavenging, so wolf prey patterns are not modern canine requirement targets.
| EVOLUTIONARY CONTEXT | WHAT IT TELLS US | WHAT IT DOES NOT TELL US |
|---|---|---|
| Wolf ancestry | Explains the canine digestive and feeding-morphology foundation. | It does not create a numeric prey-only requirement for a domestic Golden Retriever. |
| Domestication | Domestic dogs evolved alongside people and show genomic adaptation relevant to starch digestion and mixed feeding environments. | It does not mean every carbohydrate source is automatically suitable or nutritionally complete. |
| Scavenging and dietary flexibility | Helps explain why dogs can utilise a broad range of properly formulated foods. | It does not remove the need for essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins in the complete ration. |
| Whole-diet structure | Food form, palatability, chewing, enrichment and dietary variety can all influence feeding behaviour. | Food format alone is not proof of nutrient adequacy; the calculator evaluates the nutrient contribution of the actual ration. |
Canine evolutionary context is protein- and fat-relevant, but WildNutri does not convert ancestral feeding observations into invented daily nutrient requirements.
Domestic-dog genomic research supports meaningful adaptation to starch-rich human-associated diets, reinforcing that a Golden Retriever should not be treated as a wolf with a different coat.
Use this tab for evolutionary and behavioural context. Actual managed requirements come from direct canine nutrition guidance and the animal's selected life stage, body weight and physiological state.
EVOLUTIONARY CONTEXT ONLY · NO WILD GOLDEN RETRIEVER DIET OR PREY PERCENTAGE IS USED AS A FORMULATION TARGET.
CAPTIVE NUTRITION
Managed nutrition is organised around life stage, reproductive state, activity, body condition, diet completeness, ingredient suitability and measured intake. Current canine guidance is used as the requirement layer while the production calculator converts the selected animal state into practical daily outputs.
Milk replacer, preparation density, body weight, feed frequency and intake all need their own specialist workflow rather than adult canine targets.
Growth stages require their own energy and nutrient matrices, with particular attention to mineral balance and lean body condition.
Intact, neutered and lower-activity states are separated in the production calculator.
Early gestation and final-third demand are separated rather than applying one multiplier across pregnancy.
Lactation is treated as a high-demand, changing state rather than a normal adult ration.

| SETTING | MANAGEMENT FOCUS | WILDNUTRI RESPONSE |
|---|---|---|
| Low-activity companion | Measured portions, enrichment feeding, body-condition monitoring | Match calculated intake to actual activity and BCS rather than breed stereotype. |
| Working / sporting | Seasonal workload changes and performance feeding | Allow activity-dependent energy adjustment while preserving micronutrient balance. |
| Assistance / guide dog | Lean working condition and consistent routine | Build repeatable measured rations and account for training rewards inside the daily total. |
| Rescue / shelter | Intake assessment, routine, transition and BCS correction | Support gradual ration changes and recordable individual targets. |
| Multi-dog household | Individual feeding and competition management | Calculate each individual separately rather than sharing one household ration. |
| Hot / cold working conditions | Environmental effects on workload, hydration and appetite | Use environment as a modifier only where the species model and evidence support it. |

ENRICHMENT
Feeding enrichment should use measured portions of the daily ration and exploit the breed's strong scenting, retrieving, social and training motivation without quietly adding excess energy.
Use measured meal portions in manipulation-based feeders to extend feeding time and add problem-solving.
Use part of the measured ration in a stuffable toy; the Linear profile also suggests freezing suitable formats for longer engagement.
Disperse part of the ration across a safe search area so scenting and foraging replace rapid bowl consumption.
Use a portion of the daily ration as reinforcement during short positive training sessions instead of adding uncounted calories.
Present suitable foods in a snuffle or lick format to slow consumption and extend engagement.
Hide measured food portions in multiple safe locations to engage the retriever's scenting drive.
Use species-safe, size-appropriate chewing options and supervise them; chewing enrichment does not substitute for dental assessment when pain or disease is present.
Where safe and appropriate, retrieve-based water activity reflects the breed's historical working function without requiring additional food calories.
Hide or place a measured ration item, cue a search, then ask for a retrieve or indication. This combines scent work, impulse control and breed-relevant task completion.
Offer two or more safe presentation methods using the same measured ration so the dog can choose how to engage without increasing total calories.
10 BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE ENRICHMENT FORMATS · ALL FOOD-BASED OPTIONS MUST REMAIN INSIDE THE MEASURED DAILY RATION.
RED FLAGS
This tab is a keeper-facing quick-check layer: recognise clinically meaningful changes, understand where nutrition may contribute, and distinguish routine ration review from signs that require veterinary assessment.
Review measured intake, treats, activity, weight trend and potential medical contributors rather than relying on appetite.
Loading production guidance…
Body condition is nutritionally relevant because excess weight increases joint load; persistent signs require veterinary assessment.
When weight rises despite apparently controlled intake, endocrine or other medical contributors remain differentials; diet alone should not automatically be assumed to be the cause.
Persistent skin, ear or gastrointestinal signs require a structured diagnostic approach rather than random ingredient restriction.
This is an emergency pattern, not a ration-adjustment problem.
Dental pain can alter intake and food acceptance and therefore belongs in nutrition monitoring even when the primary treatment is veterinary.
Ingredient safety remains separate from nutrient chemistry. Known canine toxicants and unsafe foods must be blocked by the ingredient-suitability layer; an ingredient's nutrient content never makes an unsafe food acceptable.

BODY CONDITION SCORE
Canine 9-point body-condition scoring uses rib palpation, waist assessment from above, abdominal tuck from the side and overall fat cover. Because the dense double coat can hide body shape, palpation is particularly important in Golden Retrievers.
Ribs, spine and pelvic bones severely prominent with essentially no fat cover and visible muscle loss. Requires urgent clinical assessment.
Ribs and spine readily visible with minimal muscle and fat cover. Requires veterinary and nutritional review.
Ribs very easily palpable, minimal fat cover and a pronounced waist. Intake and underlying causes should be reviewed.
Ribs easily palpable with slight fat cover, visible waist and abdominal tuck. Suitable lean condition for many active individuals.
Ribs palpable with light pressure, moderate cover, visible waist and abdominal tuck. Maintain and track.
Ribs require firmer pressure, waist is reduced and abdominal rounding begins. Review intake, treats, activity and trend.
Ribs are difficult to palpate, waist is absent and abdominal rounding is prominent. Weight-management assessment becomes a priority.
Ribs are difficult to feel without deep pressure and heavy fat deposits are present. A structured veterinary-supervised plan is appropriate.
Extreme fat deposition with functional compromise. Requires veterinary management rather than simple unsupervised ration reduction.
Record BCS, body weight, scorer and observations consistently so changes are followed as a trend rather than judged from memory.
Long-term weight, BCS, food-consumed, diet-change and health-note trends help expose slow condition drift before it becomes severe.
BCS IS MANAGEMENT CONTEXT ONLY · SELECTING A SCORE DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY CHANGE ENERGY, PROTEIN, VITAMIN OR MINERAL PHYSIOLOGY.
CALCULATOR · CURRENT PRODUCTION ROUTE
Select the exact sex/life-stage state, enter body weight and calculate. Adult-maintenance states use the current published ration-balancing matrix. Specialist puppy, milk-replacer, reproductive and senior evidence remains state-specific and is not allowed to silently inherit adult targets.
DAILY NUTRIENT TARGETS
These daily targets are generated only from the currently published adult-maintenance requirement bank. Direct growth/reproduction evidence remains separately classified until it is formally promoted into the matching runtime state.
TODAY'S RATION BUILDER
Enter the grams you plan to feed. Ingredient choices are filtered by species and life-stage rules. Milk replacers appear in the milk-dependent workflow; unsafe ingredients remain excluded.
REQUIREMENTS VS RATION
Adequacy is shown only when the requirement and every selected ingredient contribution are compatible and complete. Unknown composition is not treated as zero.
FORMULATION ASSISTANCE
Gram suggestions appear only for a complete, unit-compatible, directly evaluable deficit. PARTIAL, DATA GAP, BASIS-GATED and context-only rows are blocked from automatic gap-closing assistance.
